Music and Family

For this music and family field study blog, I chose to interviewed my awesome mother, Rachel.

me: What is your favorite genre or artist of music and why?

mom: Christian because it makes me feel at peace and makes me feel the love of Christ and the love of Christ for other people.

me: Did you play in the band or orchestra? How long?

mom: yes, I played the tenor saxophone. I was in the band in 6th grade and didn't march until at Dorman High School I marched in the 9th and 10th grade.

me: Did you play any other instruments?

mom: I played the guitar a little bit when I was young and then I tried to play the flute but my mouth wasn't shaped right and then I played the piano.

me: Did you take any lessons?

mom: yes, I took lessons for the saxophone and piano.

me: Was there any music that was off limits growing up?

mom: My parents didn't care for heavy metal music and some of the rock music, but most of the rock was okay.

me: How do you feel about music today?

mom: Some of it is very crazy and I think there's no boundaries these days and there needs to be more boundaries on what kind of music is able to be on the radio and such. I think there is a lot of music out there that creates hatred and violence and is detrimental to the nuclear family.

me: Do you think music evolved in a negative or positive way through your lifetime?

mom: Well a lot of it is still positive, but there is more negative music now a days than when I was growing up.

me: What sort of technology did you use to listen to music growing up?

mom: I listened to music on records, the radio, cassettes, and 8-tracks. I listened to music on 8-tracks when we would go fishing on my dad's boat when I was very young.

me: Where did you usually listen to music?

mom: In my car

me: Do you have any regrets in the type of music you listened to growing up?

mom: no

me: What is your first memory or experience in music?

mom: My first memory is probably "Jesus loves me".

me: What kind of music did you listen to growing up?

mom: mostly pop, classic rock and classical music when I played the piano.

me: Do you like any music from other cultures?

mom: I like Reggae, Irish Celtic, and some Latino music.

me: Did you go to concerts? What were they like?

mom: Yes and wild.

me: What was the first concert you went to?

mom: Probably Van Halen

me: Have you met any famous musicians?

mom: Yes, I know some of the members of the Marshall Tucker Band, I knew Toy Caldwell (the best of the Marshall Tucker Band members), I know Todd Taylor (fastest banjo player), and Tasha Layton. I also came real close to talking to Ozzy Osbourne on the phone but he wasn't home.

  1. So interesting how your mother was a band kid growing up and did marching band! Her views on modern day music are important because I definitely feel like some music today spreads messages that aren't really meaningful or positive. I also find it super cool how many famous people your mom knows or has talked to!

  2. This was a great entry Julia! Haha, Ozzy Osbourne is really cool that she almost talked to him. It's really interesting to hear the perspectives that the older generations have on newer generational music, and how a lot of the time, they're not as crazy about newer music.
